Staunton June 14th 1847
Dear Brother
I had in my own mind concluded to take up a collection for Dickinson College on next Sabbath but on Saturday the Richmond Enquirer was placed in my hands from which I have clipped the enclosed. I then concluded to defer it a week longer until I received more definite information from Carlisle_I should feel extremely sorry that any professor in that institution should be engaged in encouraging a [illegible] riot by any class of the citizens or for any purpose whatsoever.
If Professor McClintock has not been guilty of any improper participation in this matter it ought to be contradicted by authority that will immediately counteract the influence of the wide spreading rumor. I think this not only due to him as a citizen a christian and a minister of the Gospel but it is equally due to the standing and influence of the College.
If the report be true as here stated his connection with the College must under exerting circumstances be fatal to its interests in the South (and in fact in all the slaveholding territory in our own Conference
We are [entirely?] at peace in this state on the Southern Church question and though Abolitionism is here repudiated the antislavery feeling is more strong here than in the sector of Pennsylvania where I have been for the last six years
You will very much oblige me individually as well as [illegible] the interests of the College by writing to me immediately as I wish to prepared to meet any rumor made varable to the College.
