Sitting Arkansas U.S. Congressman James Hinds is murdered on the road in Monroe County, Arkansas

Sitting Republican Congressman James M. Hinds of Little Rock, Arkansas was soliciting support for the Republican Party in the western part of the state when he was shot and killed on the road in Monroe County, Arkansas.  His assailant was identified as George A. Clark, secretary of the Monroe County Democratic Committee, and a suspected member of the Klu Klux Klan.  Hinds was the first sitting member of Congress to be killed in office.  His murderer was neither arrested nor tried.  (By John Osborne)
