Face of the country hilly; soil generally sterile. Seat of justice, Montgomery. Pop. in 1820, 6,604; in 1830, 12,694; in 1840, 24,574; in 1850, 29,711.

Face of the country level; soil generally barren. Seat of justice, Mobile. Pop. in 1816, 1,300; in 1820, 2,672; in 1830, 3,071; in 1840, 18,741; in 1850, 27,600.
