The coldest night of the year does not cool secessionist fervor in the South Carolina state capital

The South Carolina state capital, filled with sentiment for secession and drilling volunteers, suffered a remarkably cold night.  In the morning, the fire hydrants in the streets were discovered to be frozen.  (By John Osborne)

In Pennsylvania coal country, five drown when a rail passenger car falls into the Lehigh River

After departing Mauch Chuck, Pennsylvania around mid-day, a train of the Beaver Meadow Railroad broke a rail at the Bear Creek Dam in present-day Luzerne County and its passenger car was thrown into the Lehigh River fifteen feet below.  As the car sank in around twenty feet of water, many of the twenty-eight passengers were able to break free and escape.  Four female passengers and the train's conductor were drowned, however.  (By John Osborne)

New York's Society for the Relief of Widows and Orphans of Medical Men holds its eighteenth annual meeting

New York City's Society for the Relief of Widows and Orphans of Medical Men was founded on May 14, 1842, patterned after a similar group started in London in 1788.  It met in the afternoon at the College of Physicians and Surgeons on Fourth Avenue, elected Dr. James Anderson as its new president, and announced assets of around $2000 with a membership of 111.  Both New York and London societies remain in operation today.  (By John Osborne)
