In Canada, an earthquake across Quebec causes excitement but only mild damage and no reported deaths

A magnitude six earthquake with an epicenter to the north of Quebec City on the St Lawrence River shook the city and surrounding areas, causing significant alarm but only light damage.  The tremors took place around six o'clock in the morning and were felt as far away as Montreal and in northern Maine.  (By John Osborne)

First signs of the fall season with snow in New York and Pennsylvania and a heavy frost in Georgia

The first snow of the fall was reported at Pottsville, Pennsylvania, with around half and inch and Binghampton, New York, with around three inches.  The same day, a heavy frost was reported in Atlanta, Georgia.  (By John Osborne)

In Pennsylvania, a railroad depot near Pittsburgh is damaged by fire

In the early morning hours a fire broke out in the engine house of the Pittsburgh and Cleveland Railroad at its depot in Manchester, several miles south of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  Damage was reported as heavy with eight P.& C. R.R. locomotives destroyed.  Eventual estimates reached no more than $10,000 in damage and no-one was injured.  (By John Osborne)

In Canada, storms cause heavy damage along the coast of the Gulf of St. Lawrence

Two days of violent gales struck the Gulf of St. Lawrence in eastern Canada and caused severe damage along the western coast.  The town of Shediac in present-day New Brunswick, lost wharves and building, and sailing vessels were driven ashore.  (John Osborne)
