American naturalist and Boy Scout pioneer Ernest Thompson Seton born in northern England

By 1905, Ernest B. Seton was the best-known nature writer in America.  Born Ernest Thompson in northern England,  he moved with his family to Canada as a boy and grew up in Toronto.  To break with an oppressive Calvinist father he took up nature study, and later added "Seton" to his name.  His books chronicling his travels in the North American wilds made him famous, as did his founding of the Woodcraft Indians movement and later pioneering of the Boy Scouts of America.  He died in October 1946.  (By John Osborne)
