Teenage son of a famous newspaper magnate brawls with African-American hotel staff in Niagara Falls

In the early hours of the morning, the nineteen-year old son of the famous proprietor of the New York Herald, James Gordon Bennett, together with several of his friends, were involved in an altercation with members of the African-American night staff of the International Hotel in Niagara Falls, New York.  The wealthy young New Yorkers, who had been drinking, ended up in a mass brawl on the international bridge.  No serious injuries were reported but the press had a field day.  (By John Osborne)

Telegraph lines reach the Nebraska Territory and the first telegraph office opens in Brownville

The first telegraph office in the Nebraska Territory opened in Brownville, in Nehama County, then the largest town in the territory.  The correspondent for the New York Times reported telegraph messages from New York City reaching the office the next day.  (By John Osborne)

In cricket, the visiting United States team defeats Canada in Montreal

The latest meeting of the international cricket series between teams from Canada and the United States took place in Montreal.  Around noon on the second day, the United States XI wrapped up a comprehensive victory by an inning and forty-six runs.  (By John Osborne)
