Portuguese warship sinks in a storm on the Indian Ocean

The Portuguese warship Mondejo, a brig with a crew of a hundred, foundered and was lost in a storm in the Sunda Straight off the island of Java in the Indian Ocean. She was returning to Europe from China.  The American merchant ship Uriel went to assist the Mondejo and was able to rescue, with great difficulty, 56 of the crew before the warship sank.  (By John Osborne)

Captain of the giant steamship Great Eastern drowns in a boating accident

Captain William Harrison, the nationally popular commander of the famous new iron steamship Great Eastern was drowned in a boating accident when his gig capsized as he was being taken to his vessel from shore at Southampton, England.  This was the latest misfortune to strike the massive ship; its designer died soon after its launch, and she suffered a fatal explosion on board during trials in the English Channel the summer before.  (By John Osborne)
