The representative cricket teams of the United States and Canada met for the sixth annual match in Toronto. The United States gained the upper hand on the first day and eventually won the game on the second day by four wickets.  These encounters were the first international matches in the history of the sport world-wide.  (By John Osborne) 

Sylvester Mowry, an Arizona mineowner and former Army lieutenant who was the elected but unseated congressional delegate from the Arizona Territory, and E.E. Cross, the editor of the Arizonian newspaper, fought a duel near Tubac over comments Cross had published about Mowry.  The duel was fought with rifles and after four shots each from forty paces, all of which missed, Mowry declared that his honor had been satisfied and affair was ended. At least nine people were killed and many others injured when an defective wooden trestle collapsed under a passenger train of the Canada and Vermont Railroad near Schaghticoke in upstate New York.  The cars of the train were thrown almost forty feet into the river below and sank in eight feet of water. The American Scientific Association opened its thirteenth annual meeting in Springfield, Massachusetts.  As usual, the meeting organized itself into two sections, the Natural History Section and the Mathematical Section, and then settled down to hear the first of the forty-one scientific papers to be delivered at the conference.  (By John Osborne)

 The fifth annual convention of the American Dental Association opened its three day meeting in Niagara Falls, New York.  About sixty members attended.  L.G. Rogers of Utica, New York was elected president for the upcoming year while S. Chase from Augusta, Georgia was named treasurer.  (By John Osborne)
