During a violent thunderstorm over Long Island, a boiler explosion destroys a factory and kills a worker.

During a violent thunderstorm over Williamsburg on Long Island, New York, a lightning strike on the chimney of the Lawrence and Sons Cordage Factory in the town somehow caused a boiler explosion.  The explosion of two of four boilers killed the attendant, smashed metal over 600 feet, and started a fire that partly destroyed the factory's two multi-story buildings.  (By John Osborne)

In Charleston, South Carolina, whites and blacks clash on the streets

A Sunday afternoon near the Battery in Charleston, South Carolina became the scene of a nasty race riot after groups of black males clashed with whites and bricks were thrown.  A U.S. Army Provost tried to intervene but before order was restored, one white man had reportedly died and dozens of others of both races were injured.  (By John Osborne)
