John Brown appears before a Virginia court for the first time

John Brown appeared in court on a stretcher before Judge Parker in Charlestown, Virginia for the first time this day.  The charges against him were murder, conspiring to free slaves, and treason against the state of Virginia.  His trial began two days later and lasted five days.  He was found guilty and hanged December 2, 1859.  (By John Osborne)

John Brown stands trial in Charlestown, Virginia

The Commonwealth of Virginia tried John Brown at the courthouse in Charlestown, Virginia, Judge Richard Parker presiding.  After a trial of five days and a jury deliberation of under an hour, he was found guilty on all charges.  He was sentenced to death on November 2, 1859 and hanged exactly a month later.  (By John Osborne)
