Virginia executes John Brown

In Charlestown, on the late morning of  December 2, 1859, the Commonwealth of Virginia carried out the sentence of death imposed on John Brown for murder, incitement of slaves to revolt, and of treason against the state.  Afterwards, his body was suspended for around forty minutes on the scaffold and then taken to Harpers Ferry where it was handed over to his widow.  (By John Osborne)
