Lincoln visits dying political ally

Leading Illinois Republicans Abraham Lincoln, Jesse K. DuBois, Ozias M. Hatch and William H. Herndon visited William H. Bissell, the governor of Illinois, who lay dying from disease. Bissell, who had been crippled by illness since his service in the Mexican War, died the next day, Sunday, March 18, 1860, at the age of 48. (By Matthew Pinsker)
