Alleged embezzlers, accused of defrauding the Phoenix Bank of up to $300,000 face a New York City Court

Employees of the well-regarded Phoenix Bank in New York City and their co-conspirators had been arrested earlier on charges that they had stolen by various methods over the past two years up to $300,000.  One of the accused, who had taken up to $100,000 and lost it on the stock market had already committed suicide in his cell.  The others were brought before the Jefferson Market Police Court in the city for a preliminary hearing. The ringleader, teller Henry Jenkins, later went to prison.  (By John Osborne)

New Jersey farming families make for the beach on the day of the Grand Annual Farmer's Picnic

A growing tradition amongst New Jersey farmers of the time had been to agree on the second Saturday in August, following the harvest, to be set aside for an excursion away from the farm.  Accordingly, on this day hundreds of New Jersey farmers and their families made their way to places like Raritan Bay, near Amboy, New Jersey for a rare respite from farm life. In Connecticut, a locomotive ploughs into the back of a passenger train, killing at least seven and injuring many more

Seven passengers were killed instantly and many others injured, some severely, when a locomotive on a test run ran into the rear cars of a passenger train on the Housatonic Railroad near the village of Turnbul, Connecticut, not far from Bridgeport.  In the morning collision, the locomotive smashed through the rear car and exploded its boiler inside the carriage, causing frightful carnage.  (By John Osborne)
