In London, British authorities execute five seamen for murder on the high seas

A massive crowd outside Newgate Prison in London watched the execution by hanging of four Filipino seamen and another of Middle Eastern origin, all crewmen aboard the merchant ship Flowery Land, for the murder on the high seas of their captain the previous September. They had been convicted of piracy.  Two other men had their sentenced commuted to life imprisonment.  (By John Osborne)

In Liverpool harbor, a British vessel carrying eleven tons of gunpowder explodes after catching fire

The Lottie Sleigh was preparing to sail for Africa with a cargo that included 940 quarter-kegs of gunpowder when fire broke out in the captain's quarters in the late afternoon.  With the blaze out of control, the Wasp, a passing ferry, took off the crew. At 7:20 p.m., the deserted ship blew up in a massive explosion that rocked much of Merseyside and caused heavy damage along the docks.  No injuries were reported, however.  (By John Osborne)

Near Windsor in England, the first child, and male heir, of the Prince and Princess of Wales is born

The nineteen year-old Alexandra, Princess of Wales gave birth to a son at just before nine in the evening at Frogmore House near Windsor Castle in southern England.  She and the Prince of Wales had been married the previous year and the child had not be expected for some days.  The healthy boy was named Albert Victor and took his place as second in line to Queen Victoria's throne.  He never became king, however, since he died of pneumonia in 1892.
