Rioters brutally beat, torture, and kill Colonel Henry F. O'Brian, commander of the 11th New York Volunteers

Colonel Henry F. O'Brian and his men of the Eleventh New York had dispersed rioters on Second Avenue the evening before, using cannon firing high. Still, a woman bystander and her child were killed. O'Brian's home was burned that night and when he returned to inspect the damage the next afternoon, rioters seized him and beat him unmercifully, torturing him for a reported six hours in an horrendous mutilation murder.  (By John Osborne)
