In Maryland, Philadelphia-based Joe Coburn retains his American heavyweight boxing title

Two Irish-born fighters, Joe Coburn of Philadelphia and Mike McCoole of St. Louis, fought for the American heavyweight boxing title near Cumberland, Maryland, each side putting up $1000. Coburn was older, five inches shorter than bargeman McCoole's 6 feet two inches, but with a reputation for clever boxing.  The fight went on for seventy minutes and sixty-seven bruising rounds before McCoole was not able to "make the mark."  With "East" fighting "West," the contest had a strong sectional interest, though prizefighting was still illegal. U.S.S. Canandaiga captures the blockade runner S.S. Cherokee off Charleston

The U.S.S. Canandaiga captured the 600 ton steamer Cherokee with a cargo of cotton and six foreign passengers off Charleston Harbor in a night operation. Built in Scotland in 1859 as the Thistle, the vessel had been sold in 1862 to Charleston interests and rechristened the Cherokee.  She was later modified in Boston and became the U.S.S. Cherokee in spring 1864. Sold after the war, she ended her days as the Chilean naval steamer Ancud. (By John Osborne)
