Chicago (IL) Times, "The Campaign-- Douglas Among the People," August 22, 1858

Numerous newspapers assigned journalists to cover the 1858 Illinois Senatorial campaign. The Chicago Times, whose editor supported Stephen Douglas, followed the debates closely. This article appeared after the Ottawa Debate and claimed that “Lincoln Fails All Over!” The journalist began his report with a recollection of procession reaching a mile in length as the two candidates entered Ottawa. The reporter noted that the crowd responded to Douglas’ words with “tremendous” shouts while Lincoln met “utter defeat.” (By David Park)
