This article from the December 24, 1863 edition of the Philadelphia North American and United States Gazette provided the obituary of the Anna Maria Ross. Ross, the former Lady Principle of the Cooper Shop Hospital, passed away on December 22, 1863. Ellerslie Wallace, the President of the Cooper Shop Soldiers’ Home, worked alongside Ross during the formation of the Soldiers’ Home and provided the obituary. Ross reportedly suffered from exhaustion and overwork because of her constant dedication to the hospital’s soldiers. Wallace commended Ross for her “kindness and attention” to the soldiers that gave them comfort in sickness and death. (By Brenna McKelvey)
