George Brummzig was a member of Company I in the 54th Massachusetts Regiment. This African-American private in the Union Army was born in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania in 1843. He worked as a laborer prior to his involvement in the army and traveled to Readville, Massachusetts and enlisted on April 22, 1863 for a three-year term. His description in the official records said he was twenty-years-old, 5 feet, 5 inches tall, with light skin, gray eyes and black hair. Brummzig mustered out of the Union Army on August 20, 1865. His last known address was in Sioux City, Iowa though he is buried in Zion Union Cemetery in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania. (By Brenna McKelvey)
