Clement Baker was born in Clover Hill, Virginia around 1835 and served in the United States Colored Troops during the Civil War. According to his service records, Baker worked as a physician before the conflict. In December 1863 Baker joined the 22nd USCT as a hospital steward in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. While he tried to gain a promotion to assistant surgeon, a board of examiners rejected his application. Baker’s military service ended on October 16, 1865 in Brownsville, Texas. (By Don Sailer)
