Joseph E. Turner was born in Cuba around 1844 and served in the 41st United States Colored Troops during the Civil War. According to his service records, Turner worked as a laborer before he joined Company F of the 41st USCT as a substitute for David Wilson in Newark, New Jersey on September 22, 1864. In September 1865 Turner was transferred to Company B and the following month received a promotion to Sergeant. Turner’s military service ended on December 10, 1865 in Brownsville, Texas.
