Secretary of War Edwin Stanton telegraphed the tragic news of President Lincoln's assassination around mid-day to the Union's Army of the Mississippi commanding general William T. Sherman, then in the field in North Carolina against Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston. Stanton gives brief details and then urges that Sherman himself be alert and not become the next victim of a plot to decapitate the United States government. (By John Osborne)
