President Andrew Johnson embarking at Jersey City, New Jersey for the ferry to New York City, August 29, 1866, artist's impression, detail.

President Johnson's speaking campaign continued with an early morning departure from Philadelphia, a train journey across New Jersey with several whistlestops. Reaching Jersey City, the party took the ferry to New York City, for a civic reception, a military review, and an evening banquet. Crowds were substantial and the welcome from the city's Democratic leadership was enthusiastic. (By John Osborne)
