New York Christian Advocate, Response to "Plan for the Removal of Slavery," March 31, 1847

John Price Durbin, detail
This article from the Christian Advocate and Journal, a Methodist publication, illustrates the intense reaction to a plan by John Price Durbin for the emancipation and relocation of slaves. The author, "A Virginian," identified himself as "an anti-slavery man" but still criticized Durbin's plan for its impracticality. Durbin was an eminent Methodist clergyman and former president of Dickinson College (1833 to 1845). (By Brendan Boston)
