Steamship that struck an iceberg reaches port safely after a thirty-hour struggle

The 2200 ton, Inman Line steamship Edinburgh out of New York bound for Glasgow struck an iceberg in thick fog 180 miles east of St. Johns, Newfoundland, at 11:20 a.m..  The collision caused two bow compartments to fill with water almost immediately.  The crew and the male passengers worked the pumps for almost thirty hours to keep the ship afloat and she reached St Johns harbor the next evening.  All aboard were unharmed.  (By John Osborne)
