Senator William H. Seward was the featured speaker at a large Republican campaign rally in Detroit, Michigan. Speaking in the afternoon at the freight yards of the Milwaukee and Detroit Railroad, Seward gave an energetic speech supporting the candidacy of Abraham Lincoln and other Republicans. On a tour of the state, Seward's next stop was Lansing and then Kalamazoo. In April 1861 he became Lincoln's Secretary of State. (By John Osborne)
