President Johnson appoints Andrew Jackson Hamilton as provisional governor of Texas
A former congressman from Texas and vocal anti-secessionist, Andrew J. Hamilton had been forced to flee to Mexico during the Confederacy. He then served as the military governor of Texas, even though he was headquartered in New Orleans. President Jackson appointed him as provisonal governor and he served in Austin - overseeing the dismantling of Texas slavery - until late 1866 when he resigned. (By John Osborne)
