In Foilhummerum Bay, the cable ship William Cory had unloaded the eastern end of the new Atlantic Cable for its connection to the station at Valentia, County Kerry in Ireland and it was connected to the cableship Great Eastern six days later. In a two week operation, the Great Eastern successfully laid almost 3,700 miles of cable reaching to Newfoundland. On July 27, 1866, confirming messages were exchanged between Ireland and Canada.
