CUMBERLAND COUNTY, situated toward the south part of Pennsylvania, with Susquehanna river on the northeast. Area, 544 square miles. This county lies in the fine valley between the north and south range of mountains. The face of the country is generally, and the soil productive of grain, pasturage, and fruit. Seat of justice, Carlisle. Pop. in 1820, 23,606; in 1830, 29,218; in 1840, 30,953; in 1850, 34,327. (Fanning's, 1853)
