The Know Nothing almanac and true Americans' manual, for 1855

This was the era of the greatest influence of the American, or Know Nothing Party, which ran ex-President Millard Fillmore for the presidency on the 1856 ticket. The Almanac contains much on the Know-Nothings' plans to restrict immigration and their distaste for Roman Catholicism, campaign appeals, "secret instruction of the Jesuits," speeches by and portrayals of well-known exponents of the American creed. The text illustration of various Catholic rites are depicted in an uncomplimentary manner.
