Campaign Rituals and Ceremonies: The Social Meaning of Elections in England 1780-1860

Ritualistic components of electioneering developed with the emergence of parliamentary elections as a regular, statutory element in the political process of 18th- and 19th-century England. The nature, importance and social meaning of ritualistic electoral behavior is discussed.
