Migration and political conflict: Precincts in the midwest on the eve of the Civil War

During the 1820s and the 1830s, important sectoral differences emerged in the antebellum Midwest regarding the form of local government, legal status of blacks, and organization and support of education. Steckel develops a new source of evidence to investigate a significant dimension of geographical cleavage within the Midwest--votes in the 1860 presidential election.
