Some Southern Leaders Questioned the Wisdom of Secession

Southern leaders who were opposed to secession before their states voted to leave the Union included Confederate Vice President Alexander H. Stephens and commanding General Robert E. Lee. Confederate President Jefferson Davis first approved and then counseled caution before recommending secession.
