Fearing that she was about to be sold to a slaveowner in the Deep South, [Harriet Ross Tubman], at the age of 30, escaped across the border into Pennsylvania and continued on to freedom in Canada. From her base in Ontario, she began to plan her forays back into slave territory. Despite the fact that she had a $40,000 bounty on her head, Harriet Tubman made at least 11 trips into slaveholding states. Traveling in the disguise of a deranged old man or woman, Tubman went south and provided slaves with money, provisions, food, transportation, and a route of escape on the Underground Railroad.
