One hundred and twenty-five years ago, in October 1859, abolitionist John Brown attacked the arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia, in an unsuccessful attempt to force an end to slavery in America. He was caught and eventually hanged, but his courage during his trial and imprisonment and his eloquence on behalf of his cause transformed him into a hero.
