Abbeville District, SC

ABBEVILLE DISTRICT, west part of South Carolina, bordering on the Savannah river. It is about 31 miles square, with an area of 1,000 square miles. The surface agreeably diversified by hill and dale, the soil generally rich and well watered, and susceptible of profitable cultivation. Courts are held at Abbeville, the chief town. Pop., in 1820, 22,189; in 1830, 28,149; in 1840, 29,351; in 1850, 32,318. (Fanning's, 1853)
