MONROE COUNTY, situated on the east boundary of the Mississippi, and traversed by Little Tombigbee river. Area, 650 square miles. Seat of justice, Athens. Pop. in 1820, 2,721; in 1830, 3,861; in 1840, 9,250; in 1850, 21,172. (Fanning's, 1853)
