AMITE COUNTY, situated in the southwest part of Mississippi, on the north line of Louisiana. Length, 30 miles; breadth, 24, with an area of 720 square miles. The face of the country is moderately hilly, but contains a considerable alluvion or “bottom land,” and much of the surface is covered by pine forests. Courts are held at Liberty. Pop. in 1820, 6,859; in 1830, 7,943; in 1840, 9,511; in 1850, 9,694. (Fanning's, 1853)
