BENNINGTON COUNTY, situated at the southwest corner of Vermont. Length, 40 miles; mean width, 17; with an area of 680 square miles. The face of the country is mountainous and hilly; the soil generally productive, and particularly suited for grazing and fruit. Seats of justice at Bennington and Manchester. Pop. in 1820, 16,125; in 1830, 17,470; in 1840, 16,872; in 1850, 18,589. (Fanning's, 1853)
