CLAIBORNE COUNTY, situated on the western boundary of Mississippi, on the east side of Mississippi river, with Big Black river on the northwest. Area, 500 square miles. Face of the country hilly, except along the stream. Soil varied from rich bottom lands to sterile hills and sandy pine plains. Seat of justice, Port Gibson. Pop. in 1820, 5,963; in 1830, 9,818; in 1840, 13,078; in 1850, 14,899. (Fanning's, 1853)
