The third session of the 41st Congress of the United States opens in Washington, DC

The "lame duck" third session of the Forty-first Congress opens in Washington, DC. The House and the Senate will sit until the normal holiday recess which begins on December 22, 1870. In the House, James G. Blaine of Maine sits in the speaker's chair. (By John Osborne)
