The premiere of Charles Gounod's opera Faust took place at the Theatre Lyrique in Paris. Set in five acts from the Goethe story, the performance was received with a relative indifference that belied its later world-wide popularity. The first United States production took place at the Academy of Music in New York City on November 26, 1863. (By John Osborne)
