Bergen County, N. J., c. h. at Hackensack. In the N. E. corner, between the Hudson on the E. and the N. Y. boundary on the W. Watered by the Hackensack and Saddle Rivers. The surface in the central part is generally level, or undulating; the W. is mountainous, and on the E. is the lofty trap ridge, known as the Palisades, extending its whole width on the Hudson. The soil, in the valleys especially, is productive. (Gazetteer of the United States of America, 1854)
