CONVENTION OF COLORED CITIZENS. A convention of the colored citizens of the New England states was commenced at the Meionaion in Boston yesterday. The object of the gathering is to promote the interests of the colored people as to their rights and duties as citizens – a character which some of the ermined officials of the federal courts have assumed to ignore altogether. The Atlas and Bee says the attendance was very large, filling the hall to an uncomfortable degree. George T. Downing of Rhode Island presided, assisted by a number of vice presidents and secretaries. Three sessions were held, the last one in the evening in the Tremont Temple hall. The convention will be continued to-day. Many of the members are marked for ability, and not a few of the leaders in attendance good looking, nearly to elegance. The female delegations from Providence and New Bedford were especially worthy of compliment for their beauty and grace.
