White, Horace, M.A. LL.D. ; b. Colebrook, N. H., 10 Aug. 1834; s. of Horace White, physician, and Elizabeth Moore; m. 1st 1859, Martha H. Root (d. 1878); 2nd, 1875, Amelia J. MacDougall; three d. Educ.: Beloit College, Beloit, Wisconsin. Graduated, 1853; went to Chicago, and became city editor of the Chicago Evening Journal, 1854; assistant editor of the Chicago Tribune, 1857; chief editor, 1865-74; removed to New York, 1877; joined others in purchasing to New York, 1877; joined others in purchasing the New York Evening Post, 1882; Editor 1899-1903. Publications: Took an active part in supporting the Gold Standard in the monetary struggle following the CIvil War, published numerous pamphlets, and also a book entitled Money and Banking in 1895 (2nd edition in 1902)'; translated from the Greek the Roman History of Appian of Alexandria, 1899.
