The American merchant ship Flora Temple struck a reef in the Indian Ocean and foundered in heavy seas. With a crew of around fifty and around 850 Chinese emigrant passengers aboard, the vessel had sailed from Macao six days before. Many of the crew largely attempted to save themselves and survived a two-week ordeal in open boats. None of the Chinese passengers were found alive. (By John Osborne)
