The Grand Trunk Railway of Canada, founded in 1853 to link the towns of Ontario and Quebec, leased an extension of line connecting Port Huron with Detroit, Michigan and opened service. This meant that the railroad could transport passengers from Montreal, over the new Victoria Bridge and via a ferry service to Port Huron, to the Detroit terminus of the Michigan Central Railroad.
