REPUBLICANISM DEFINED. – Joshua R. Giddings, one of the Black Republican leaders, writing home from Washington, thus defines Black Republicanism:
Our friends at home should be slow to censure their Representatives for deserting Mr. Sherman. They did so for the purpose of electing a Speaker, and defeating a party that has long wielded the Federal power to the support of slavery. They felt the humiliation of discarding a candidate because he had endorsed the doctrines of Helper’s book, every sentence of which finds a response in the hearts of all true Republicans.
