Annie Oakley, sharpshooter, is born in Darke County, Ohio

Phoebe Ann Moses was born the fifth of six girls to a poor Quaker farming family in Darke County, Ohio. Growing up in grinding poverty she began hunting to feed her family.  By the time she was fifteen her remarkable talent as a sharpshooter had been recognized and she joined Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show in 1885.  She continued to set shooting records into her sixties.  Annie Oakley died in 1926.  (By John Osborne)
